Sierra Nevada Mountains in Spain

Sierra NevadaThe city of Granada is situated right at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The mountains are a fantastic place to go hiking and escape the summer heat.

There are over 20 peaks above 10,000 feet, making Sierra Nevada the second highest mountain range in Europe after the Alps. Sierra Nevada also includes the two highest peaks in the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacén at 11,247 ft (3,482 m) followed closely by Pico del Veleta at 11,142 ft (3,396 m). The mountain range is one of only two national parks in all of Andalucia. In 1986 it was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve for its exceptionally diverse plant, bird and animal species.

On the western side of the mountains is the southernmost ski resort in Europe. Ski season generally runs from November through April.

If you make a trip up to the Sierra Nevada during your time in Granada, be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat. It’s really easy to get sunburned up there in the mountains.
