Arabic Tea Houses

"Tea House Street" in GranadaGranada is famous for its street called Calle de la Calderería Nueva more popularly known as “La Calle de las Teterías” or “Tea House Street”. Nowhere else in Spain is there anything quite like it. This street is located in the lower part of the Albayzin just one block from Gran Vía, the main street in Granada. But don’t let the name fool you. This street is anything but “nueva”. In fact, it’s one of the most ancient and exotic streets in Granada.

A tea house in GranadaThe street is known as “Tea House Street” because, you guessed it, there are dozens of Arabic tea houses all along this short and narrow street where the ancient Islamic heritage of Granada is still preserved. A walk down Tea House Street transports you to a far away land and to a time long, long ago.

Hookah in a tea house in GranadaAlthough the street is always alive with activity, there is a great sense of calm here. Soft Arabic music wafts out from the tea houses. The scents of exotic spices and home-made Arabic sweets permeate the air. The tenuous light inside the tea houses only intensifies the brilliance of the colorful products in the Arabic shops.

Try some Pakistani tea. It’s my personal favorite. In the evenings, many of the tea houses offer live entertainment such as Arabic music or belly dancing.
