What? They don’t speak Spanish in Barcelona?

Although castellano (i.e. “Spanish”) is the official national language of Spain, there are four other official regional languages. And believe it or not, in many areas of Spain the people do not speak Spanish as a first language. For example, in Barcelona and the region of Catalonia, they speak Catalan. In Galicia they speak Gallego, and in places like San Sebastian, Bilbao and Pamplona they speak Basque. Other languages spoken in Spain include Leonese, Extremaduran, and Aragonese.

Castillian Spanish (i.e. “Spanish”) is spoken exclusively in places like Madrid, Castilla la Mancha and, of course, Granada.
