The meal schedule in Spain is a little bit different from in the U.S. The first meal of the day is, of course, breakfast which is eaten around 8 or 9 in the morning. Later in the morning around 10:30 or 11:00 Spaniards often go out for a second breakfast. We’ll usually go out with friends or coworkers to a cafe and have a cup of coffee or tea and maybe a croissant or some toast. The biggest meal of the day is eaten around 2:00pm. Since it’s the biggest meal, I’ll call it “dinner.” In Spanish, it’s called la comida (“the meal”). Just as with dinner in the States, la comida is a time to sit down with family, relax and talk about the day. Finally, we’ll eat a very light supper around 9pm. For Spaniards, supper might even be just a piece of fruit or some salad. If you’re staying with a host family, however, you’ll be given a more substantial supper. Be aware, though, that the food served for supper may seem rather unusual at times.
