In Spain most restaurants have what’s called a menu. It’s kind of the same concept as a “Value Meal.” It almost always works is like this… You get a first course, a second course and a dessert plus bread and a drink for a reasonable price (usually between 7-12€). You’ll usually have about 4 different choices for each course and often a few choices for dessert, as well. Menus are served only for the midday meal from about 1:00-3:30 pm. Menus are probably one of the most economical ways to go out for the main meal of the day.
When in a group, it’s customary for one person to treat everyone to the meal. There is an understanding that the other members of the group “owe” that person a meal. So, for example, if David, Sara and Emily go out for dinner and Emily pays for all their meals, both David and Sara will each have to treat Emily to dinner some time. Another custom is to simply split the bill evenly between everyone, regardless of who ordered what. It’s generally considered kind of rude to calculate the exact price of what each person ordered.
